Managing Sciatica Pain with Manual Therapy

Managing Sciatica Pain with Manual Therapy

Sciatica can be a frustrating and painful condition that affects daily life. For many people, sitting, standing, and walking can become uncomfortable due to the radiating pain that travels down the leg. Fortunately, manual therapy for sciatica can provide significant relief and improve mobility.

The team at Rising Sun Physical Therapy recently worked with a patient, David, who had developed sciatica. We want to share his story to help you understand how our hands-on approach to therapy can play a crucial role in sciatica pain management.

A Patient’s Journey: Finding Sciatica Relief with Manual Therapy

David (not his real name) is an avid runner who developed sciatica after months of increased training. What started as mild discomfort in his lower back soon turned into a sharp pain that extended down his right leg. Walking and sitting for extended periods became unbearable, making everyday activities difficult.

He was eventually diagnosed with sciatica, which occurs when the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg, becomes irritated or compressed. He had all of the typical symptoms:

  • Sharp, shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Weakness in the affected leg
  • Increased pain with prolonged sitting or sudden movements

Uncovering the Source of David’s Pain

After trying stretches and over-the-counter medications with little success, David visited Rising Sun Physical Therapy for professional help. One of our physical therapists evaluated his symptoms to find out why he had developed sciatica.

Why? Because sciatica isn’t a condition in and of itself. Instead, it develops due to some kind of impairment in the lower back that affects the sciatic nerve. In David’s case–as in most cases of sciatica–it was a herniated disc.

While medications may help temporarily, a comprehensive treatment plan that includes manual therapy for sciatica can address the root cause of the pain. And that’s exactly what we developed for David.

How Manual Therapy Helped Reduce David’s Sciatica Pain

Manual therapy involves hands-on techniques that help relieve muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and reduce nerve compression. David’s treatment plan included these specific techniques:

Soft Tissue Mobilization

  • We used gentle massage techniques to release tight muscles in David’s lower back and hips, reducing pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Joint Mobilization

  • Targeted movements helped improve spinal alignment and reduce stiffness in the lower back.

Nerve Gliding Techniques

  • Specific stretches and guided movements helped free the sciatic nerve from surrounding restrictions, improving mobility and reducing pain.

With each session, David noticed a significant improvement in his symptoms. His pain levels decreased, and he regained the ability to walk comfortably without shooting pain.

Additional Physical Therapy Techniques

David’s physical therapist also incorporated targeted exercises and lifestyle adjustments to ensure a comprehensive approach. Techniques included the following:

Core Strengthening Exercises

  • Building core stability helped reduce pressure on his lower spine.

Postural Corrections

  • Adjustments to his running form and daily posture helped prevent further irritation.

Stretching Routine

  • Daily hamstring and hip stretches improved mobility and reduced nerve compression.

After several weeks of consistent therapy, David experienced lasting relief. He could return to his running routine with a stronger, healthier body.
