Balance: Not Just an Age-Related Issue
When people think of balance, they often assume it’s only a concern for adults over 65. But at Rising Sun Physical Therapy, we see balance challenges across all ages—even among younger people. Preventing falls and building steadiness early in life makes a big difference for your long-term health, safety, and confidence.
Why Balance Matters at Every Age
Research shows balance is strongly linked to overall health and longevity. A 2022 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that adults who couldn’t stand on one leg for 10 seconds had nearly double the risk of dying in the following decade compared to those who could. The CDC also lists balance training as one of the most effective strategies for fall prevention.
The good news? Balance can be trained and improved at any age. Simple practices like standing on one leg or trying the tandem walk (heel-to-toe in a straight line) can be done daily to strengthen your stability and reduce your risk of falls and injuries.
The “I Just Tripped” Myth
I often hear people explain their falls by saying, “I just tripped.” While sometimes that’s true, many of these incidents are connected to underlying balance challenges. Small stumbles are often signs that your nervous system is not responding as quickly as it could. Balance training sharpens those reflexes and can prevent a minor trip from turning into a serious fall.
What We See in the Clinic
Patients often describe falls with, “I just tripped.” While that may sometimes be true, many of these incidents are connected to underlying balance issues. Injuries—such as to the neck, shoulder, or ankle—can also throw off stability, slowing reaction time and increasing fall risk.
Physical therapy can identify these patterns and retrain the nervous system to respond more quickly and efficiently. With targeted exercises, we can help you rebuild confidence, restore coordination, and feel steadier on your feet.

My Own Story
I know this firsthand. Many years ago, I suffered a major neck injury. Day to day, I felt mostly stable, but when hiking I noticed I slipped more easily on steep or wet terrain. At first, I brushed it off as “just tripping.” But eventually I realized my balance truly had declined.
Through targeted balance training—and later through my somatic movement practice with 5Rhythms®—I retrained my nervous system to adapt to change. Today, I can move across uneven ground with more steadiness and confidence than I had 20 years ago.
The Power of Balance Training
Balance isn’t just about preventing falls—it’s about reclaiming ease, resilience, and confidence in how you move through the world.
At Rising Sun Physical Therapy, we help patients rebuild balance after injury and strengthen it as part of preventative care. And through my work with Aurras Transformation, I also offer 5Rhythms® dance classes that integrate balance with rhythm, presence, and whole-body movement. This somatic practice helps people reconnect with themselves and discover balance in a more holistic way.
