A Whole-Body Approach to Preventing Injury Before It Starts
When physical activity leads to stiffness, pain, or other issues, it can be tempting to assume you’re better off staying sedentary. But the truth is that your body is designed to move, and movement should feel good. When it doesn’t, that’s often your body’s way of letting you know you may be headed toward an injury.
At Rising Sun Physical Therapy, we believe in listening to your body. Our approach to care goes beyond merely treating pain and instead focuses on addressing the underlying dysfunction so you can move with confidence, strength, and awareness–helping make injuries less likely to happen in the first place.
Why Do Injuries Happen, Anyway?
Most people associate injuries with sudden, major events, such as tripping and falling. But the reality is that many injuries develop gradually and are rarely caused by a single bad movement. Instead, they build from small changes in how your body moves and responds to stress.
Let’s say you threw out your back while helping your friend move. It’s true that the strain of lifting something too heavy for you caused some immediate damage. But there’s a good chance that the affected back muscle was already susceptible to injury for other reasons, such as misalignments in the spine or a weakened core.

Preventing injuries is about addressing those issues before they can become a full-blown problem. Some of the most frequent culprits we see include:
- Muscle imbalances, where some muscles are overworked while others are underused
- Limited joint mobility
- Poor movement habits during daily activities or exercise
- Fatigue or stress affecting coordination and recovery
This is also why Rising Sun Physical Therapy‘s whole-body approach is so essential. Your body is a complex, interconnected system, and focusing solely on the part that hurts can lead you to ignore other areas that might need attention.
For example, knee pain doesn’t always indicate a problem with the knee. Sometimes, it’s related to hip weakness or limited ankle mobility. Addressing these concerns can help improve the overall function of your lower body, reducing your knee pain in the process.
Exercise of the Month
Bird Dog
(Core, Lower Back, Glutes)
Start on your hands and knees on a mat or table. Brace your abdominals and keep your back flat. Slowly raise one arm straight out in front of you while simultaneously raising your opposite leg back behind you until both limbs are straight and parallel with the ground. Lower them back down and repeat with your other limbs. 3 Sets, 10 Reps.
Five Ways Rising Sun Physical Therapy Works to Reduce Your Injury Risk

We Help You Build Strength and Stability
A personalized strengthening program is essential to injury prevention, as strong, well-coordinated muscles support your joints and improve your ability to handle physical demands. We might focus on:
- Core stability to support the spine and improve balance
- Hip and lower body strength to reduce stress on the knees
- Upper body strength to support posture and daily tasks
We Show You How to Improve the Quality of Your Movement
Healthy movement requires good mobility. If your joints are restricted, your body may start to compensate in ways that increase strain elsewhere. Gentle stretching, hands-on manual therapy, and movement retraining can help you develop smoother, more efficient movement patterns.
We Support the Nervous System
Your nervous system plays a central role in how your body responds to movement, stress, and physical load. When it’s under stress, it can affect your coordination and reaction times, increasing your chance of injury. That’s why we incorporate mind-body techniques into our care plans, such as breathing techniques to promote relaxation or somatic exercises to improve body awareness.
We Get You Moving with Structured Classes
Regular physical activity is one of the easiest ways to maintain strength, mobility, and coordination. We offer one-on-one Pilates-based work to bridge the gap between physical therapy and regular activity and help you gain a better sense of how your body moves. In collaboration with Aurras Transformation, we offer Aurras Waves, a guided 5Rhythms® movement class that helps people break old movement patterns, reset the nervous system, and reconnect with their body through music, breath, and movement.
We Help Break the Cycle of Repeat Injury
Does it feel like you’re always getting hurt in the same place? When you don’t recover properly after an injury, it’s common for the body to remain vulnerable in that area, causing small limitations that just increase your chances of getting injured again. Our whole-body approach helps break this cycle.
Injury Prevention That Adapts to You
Every person who comes into our clinic brings a different history, lifestyle, and set of goals. When our team builds your care plan, we take those details into account, designing an injury prevention program tailored to your specific needs. Ultimately, we want to work with you to create a body that moves with ease and adapts to the demands of daily life, whatever they may be.

Don’t wait for pain to be your wake-up call.
How Pilates Supports Better Movement
Feeling confident in your body’s movement is one of the best things you can do for injury prevention. When you understand how your body is meant to move, it becomes easier to recognize early signs like tightness, imbalance, or poor control – often before an injury develops.
One of the most effective ways to build that connection is through Pilates-based work at Rising Sun Physical Therapy.
A More Personalized Approach to Pilates
At Rising Sun Physical Therapy, Pilates is not a group class or one-size-fits-all experience. Every session is one-on-one and tailored specifically to you – your body, your movement patterns, your injury history, and your goals.
This individualized approach is what sets Pilates with a physical therapist apart from a general fitness setting. A physical therapist brings advanced training in biomechanics, movement analysis, injury prevention, posture, and nervous system function. This allows each exercise to be carefully selected and adjusted in real time, helping you move more efficiently while avoiding compensation patterns that can lead to pain.
Pilates in this setting becomes more than just exercise; it becomes a way to retrain how your body moves as a whole.

Building Awareness and Control
Pilates helps your body move in a coordinated, balanced way, reducing the risk of strain over time. Through guided, intentional movement, you’ll improve strength, stability, and communication between muscle groups.
Just as importantly, you’ll develop a deeper awareness of how your body feels during movement.
What to Expect During Your Session
We view Pilates as a natural extension of your physical therapy plan, designed to support how your body functions in everyday life.
Each session is fully guided and adapted to your needs. You’ll never feel rushed or pushed beyond what feels appropriate. Instead, you can expect:
- Slow, controlled movements that build stability
- Focused core activation to support your spine and pelvis
- Breathwork to improve control and reduce tension
- Postural awareness to carry into daily activities
Your therapist will be there throughout the session to guide, adjust, and answer any questions so you feel supported every step of the way.
A Space Where You Feel Understood
At Rising Sun Physical Therapy, Pilates is part of a whole-body approach rooted in listening and trust. You’re not expected to push through discomfort. Instead, we help you understand what your body needs and how to support it.
If you’re looking for a more personalized, guided approach to movement, Pilates-based therapy can be a powerful place to start.
